July 2013

Like most of my neighbors, with all the rain we have been getting the past month, my garden has exploded and I already have more produce than I know what to do with. I’ve tried giving it away and people are already so tired of me throwing zucchini at them that I think they are starting avoiding me. So this year, after I can’t stomach another bite of zucchini or squash, and I can’t find any friends to give it to, I’m going to donate it.

After doing some research, I found a great website called AmpleHarvest.org. The mission of this website is to connect the 40 million plus Americans who have a garden with the 50 million plus Americans who live in food insecure homes. By simply entering your zip code, AmpleHarvest.org provides a list of food banks…

We are sooooo lucky in Denver, where the Craftsman style of architecture is very prevalent, and in many cases has been preserved from many decades ago.  We are also seeing architects use the basics of Craftsman homes even in brand-new construction throughout the Denver Metro area.

Common features of Craftsman Homes:

  • 1 - 2 stories

  • Low-pitched roof, hipped, gabled, sometimes with a clipped gable. Roof lines may be complex and cross gabled

  • Broad eaves

  • Knee braces, exposed rafter tails and beams, elaborated rafter ends and verge boards, occasionally roof ridge finials

  • Natural materials indigenous to location (exception: kit homes)

  • Open floor plan

  • Dormers:

With interest rates up, and the heat of summer on, the crazy Denver Real Estate market has noticeably slowed down since July 4th. Speaking with fellow agents, it appears that a lot of buyers are holding off on buying until they figure out what rates are going to do and sellers finally got the message that it is a great time to sell so we have more inventory than we have had all year. Combined, this is a big reason why homes having gone from selling in a day to weeks or even months again.

I certainly understand why buyers are cautious about buying now and hoping rates will start to come back down. However, I don’t think we are ever going to see 3.5% again and I would argue that waiting for rates to drop another .125-.25% is the absolute worst

On the evening of Friday, July 19, I-70, between I-25 and Federal Boulevard, will be closed to allow crews to demolish the existing Pecos Street bridge and roll the new 2,400-ton bridge into place over the highway. I-70 will reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, July 22.

It will take approximately eight hours to demolish the existing bridge starting at midnight on July 19 and more than 10 hours to move the new bridge into place over I-70. The bridge is anticipated to be in its final placement over I-70 in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 21.
