About the Event and Race in General
How many teams will be racing?
The Race is capped at 250 teams, so be prepared for competition. Still, your odds of winning ten grand are way better than Vegas. Teams will be divided into waves to help manage traffic flow, with waves starting 20 minutes apart. Be there early to get in the first wave.
What if I’m not in top physical condition?
Don’t stress. This isn’t a foot race or a physical competition. It’s not necessarily about speed either. Teams will drive from place to place. Mental smarts will count, however, because the race is about wits, skill and strategy.
How long will the race last?
Every team will have 4 hours to accumulate as many points as they can.
Our kids/friends/grandparents are excited about The Race and want to come along. Can they join us?
As long as they don’t slow you down, they’re welcome to join in the fun. Challenges will still need to be performed by the primary racing team.
Where is The Race route?
The race will begin in central Denver at The Exdo Hall, 3545 Larimer. Depending on LIVE Urban inventory, Open House locations might be in any of Denver’s urban neighborhoods. The Race route could also extend into nearby suburbs, to Sponsor locations, to popular Denver Points of Interest, etc. The Race will end where it started—at The Exdo Hall.
What should I wear or bring to the Race? Is there anything special that might help?
Comfortable shoes and clothing are advised. You will be given a Race Day T-shirt that you must wear to identify yourself as an official Racer. You may use your smart phone or GPS to help your find your way around the city, so don't forget to charge it!
About Race Rules
Do I have to use the prize money to buy a home?
No. You can use the Grand Prize cash for anything you'd like. Of course, we'd love for you to purchase a home, but you don't have to!
Do I have to be a first-time home buyer?
No. Anyone is welcome to race as long as they are age 18 and over. The Race will no doubt attract the attention of first-time homebuyers and move-up homebuyers who can use the $10,000 for a down payment. But the prize can be used for anything you want.
How do I get from place to place along the race course?
Though green-minded teams might consider other wheeled modes of transportation, driving the course may be to your advantage. One race rule to be followed, however—you cannot hire a driver (and we don't advise speeding, parking illegally...or anything else that might result in a ticket...and a Race delay!)
How is the winner determined?
It is a Race...but it’s more about strategy and how you spend your time than speed. At the end of the Race, the team with the most points wins. In the event of a tie, an on-site tie-breaker activity will determine the winner.
How are the points earned?
Points can be earned in several ways. Each Open House visit earns a certain number of points -- and those homes that are farther away from The Exdo Hall might be worth more (hint, hint).
Successfully performing Challenges will earn you points as well...but if there are several teams waiting to participate in a Challenge, it's up to you to decide if it's worth it to stick around!
Do I and my racing partner both have to be present to win?
Absolutely! Both racers on the team must be present to win the Grand Prize, as well as door prizes at the After Party. (We want the chance to take your photo with that big check!)
Do I have to pay taxes on the prize?
Yes, the lucky winner of the $10,000 down payment will have to settle up with Uncle Sam.*
*Consult your tax professional for details.
What if I or my racing partner gets sick or can’t race that day?
Can I substitute someone else? We sure hope that doesn’t happen, but...
If you or your teammate can’t make it on Race Day, you can transfer your registration to someone else by contacting the race staff at Race@LiveUrbanDenver.com. Registration fees are considered a donation to Habitat for Humanity of Colorado and will not be refunded for no-shows.
If I win do I have to buy a house through Live Urban Real Estate?
No, although we would encourage you to use a Live Urban Real Estate agent if you want to buy a home with your winnings, you are not required to do so.
What if I am already working with a Realtor?
You can use your own Realtor. We still encourage you to race!
Do I have to use Guild Mortgage for my lender?
No, while we encourage you to consider Guild Mortgage as your lender, you are not required to.
Do I have to buy a house in a certain amount of time?
No, you are not required to buy a home in order to participate in the race.
